I am pleased that we are able to once again prepare and distribute another edition of the HotSheet – February 2014. I hope that you’re off to a great start in the New Year! Ours has been busy with the relocation of the Us TOO corporate offices, following the planning process and location search that began in 2013. There was much drama as we battled the snow and cold that we’ve been experiencing here in the Chicago area over the past several weeks while settling into our new home office. Slightly smaller and more economical than our former space, our new location in Des Plaines, IL, is adjacent to O’Hare Airport and major expressways which should prove to be helpful. Please stop in to visit us the next time you’re in the area.
Johnny Payne from the Harvey Floyd Chapter in Greenville, SC, was our first visitor. Arriving the morning following the movers’ late-night delivery of our second truck load, he saw the office in major transition. I joined Johnny the next evening, as well as previous Us TOO Board member Don Lynam and other friends and colleagues, at the NASPCC reception during their advocacy training session that was held in the area. As you know, we seek to collaborate and work together where we can, and I appreciate the opportunity to keep informed on the efforts of fellow organizations and volunteers battling prostate cancer.
I have also been on the road a great deal so far in 2014. I conducted satellite media tour interviews on nearly 20 New York radio and television stations with Dr. David Henry discussing bone health, held our first Us TOO executive committee planning meeting in Indianapolis, and attended a meeting on access and affordability in Washington, DC. Also, I will be representing Us TOO at the Genitourinary Cancer Symposium later this week in San Francisco.
In addition to starting 2014 with four new members on our board of directors – Fred Allen from Arkansas, Jerry Deans from Virginia, Keith Hoffman from Texas, and Jim Naddeo from Michigan – we are pleased to announce that John Lupton and Chuck Strand have transitioned from being consultants to joining the staff of Us TOO. I’m looking forward to the positive impact we can collectively make to further our mission of support, education and advocacy through collaboration among board members, staff and volunteers to help men and their families make informed decisions about prostate cancer detection and treatment. I’m excited that we’ve geared up our team for 2014! Our new Board Chairman Jim Rieder has appointed committees and several have dates scheduled for sessions over the next few weeks.
We’ve just learned of a free webinar, “Surgical Treatment Options for Spinal Column Tumors,” on Thursday, February 20, from 7:00 – 8:00 pm EST. Johns Hopkins spinal neurosurgeon Dr. Daniel Sciubba will share information on the latest surgical approaches to treat spinal column tumors such as metastatic spinal tumors and primary spine tumors. Viewers will also be able to ask Dr. Sciubba questions after the presentation. Register here or get more information.
Looking back, I want to say “thank you” to everyone who participated in the “Be Thankful - Pay it Forward” fourth quarter fundraising campaign. Together we raised more than $44,000. Funding for the free educational materials and support services we provide is needed more now than ever before as an aging population results in more people who will be impacted by prostate cancer. And with The American Cancer Society eliminating their Man To Man® Prostate Cancer Education and Support Program, more people are looking to Us TOO for help.
My best to you all,
President & CEO
