Dear Friend,

Every year during the month of September the spotlight shines blue on prostate cancer, and as a community we rally around the SEA Blue Walk & Run. We’d like to give special thanks and pay tribute to some of the many amazing and inspirational prostate cancer survivors and their families who bravely fight a daily battle with the disease while helping to ensure the ongoing success and growth of the SEA Blue Prostate Cancer Walk & Run.

Thank You, Russ
Russ Gould 2008Russ Gould has been managing his advanced prostate cancer for the past 14 years. He was one of the founding members of the SEA Blue Walk & Run, along with Myrna Porter and Shirley Grey, who each lost her husband to prostate cancer. Unfortunately, Russ’s current state of health precluded him from attending the walk this year to join other members of Team Russ Gould. Through his work as a prostate cancer specialist with Wellness Place, patient advocate with the National Institute of Health Scientific Programs of Research Excellence (NIH SPORE), Us TOO International chapter leader and lecturer, and past vice chairman of the Us TOO Board of Directors, Russ has counseled thousands of men to develop effective action plans for prostate cancer treatment. Thank you, Russ! We wish you all the best.

A Tribute to JerodJerod Loeb

In 2012, Jerod Loeb was a prostate cancer survivor on stage addressing the crowd at the SEA Blue Walk along with his wife, Sherri, and daughters, Jen and Becca. This year Sherri took the stage speaking on behalf of her husband, since Jerod was too ill to attend the event. In keeping with their selfless dedication of helping others, the Loeb family led Team Loeb Nation on the walk to generate additional awareness and funding to fight prostate cancer. Jerod Loeb passed away on October 9, 2013. We extend our sincere sympathy, gratitude, and prayers to the Loeb family. As Executive Vice President for Healthcare Quality and Measurement with the Joint Commission, Jerod was instrumental in driving quality improvement at hospitals and healthcare organizations. He was recognized with The John M. Eisenberg Honorary Lifetime Achievement Award in Patient Safety and Quality. More about Jerod can be found on his caring bridge site. Click here to read a recent article about Jerod and Sherri raising awareness of prostate cancer through their dedication to the SEA Blue event.

The SEA Blue Prostate Cancer Walk & Run is the largest fundraiser to support Us TOO International and Wellness Place, two 501(c)3 non-profit organizations committed to providing prostate cancer survivors and their families with vital services free of charge.

Donations to support this vital mission are still being accepted until October 31.

UroPartners Appreciation

This year, Us TOO and Wellness Place welcomed UroPartners as a presenting organization under the leadership of UroPartners Chief Operating Officer W. Patrick O'Hara MA, MBA. The efficient collaboration among the three organizations was instrumental in attracting more corporate sponsorship than ever before.

Harris with TerriSpecial thanks to Dr. Richard Harris with UroPartners, (wearing a yellow rain coat in the adjacent photo) who helped to welcome the crowd from the stage and set a positive tone for the event - in spite of the inclement weather; and to Dr. Par Mehta, Medical Director of UroPartners Patient Treatment Center at The Glen, who led a team of 10 to 15 physicians in the mobile medical unit onsite to provide free PSA tests to more than 90 men. blue chicagoUroPartners was also responsible for raising awareness of prostate cancer by arranging for the blue illumination of several Chicago architectural landmarks including the Wrigley Building, Navy Pier and Merchandise Mart; and by securing Chicago Lincoln Park Alderman of the 43rd Ward Michele Smith to present a resolution at the event proclaiming September as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month in Chicago. And hats off to each of the 140 runners and walkers with the UroPartner LLC team!

Our Gratitude

Thank you to our 2013 SEA Blue Prostate Cancer Walk & Run corporate sponsors along with every walker, runner, volunteer, vendor, spectator and donor! Together we should all be very proud of the success from our collective effort for raising awareness of prostate cancer while raising funds to help empower others through prostate cancer educational materials, resources and support services.

Warm regards,
Thomas Kirk
