The home page for The SEA Blue Chicago Prostate Cancer Walk/Run
includes a photo from 2012 featuring Eric Fastabend, a young man leading the
pack and wearing number 755. Eric is the captain of Team Fastabend. For the sixth consecutive year, the team will
be gathering family members, running shoes, water bottles, and beautiful
memories to participate in the 2013 SEA Blue Prostate Cancer Walk/Run in honor
of Eric’s father, the late Bill Fastabend.
"It's hard to believe it
has been six years since our dad passed," said Eric, a pilot for Southwest
Airlines who lives in Naperville. "Had he been tested earlier, he
might still be here."
Back in 2004, Bill Fastabend was
not feeling well. Ever since the age of 40, Bill had thought of himself as
being sufficiently responsible in maintaining his health. He got an annual
check-up and was living a relatively healthy lifestyle. His doctors had never
brought up the idea of checking PSA numbers. When an initial test was
finally done, Bill's PSA was 2000 and he was diagnosed with stage 4 prostate cancer
at age 58.
"By participating in this
event, our hope is to raise awareness of prostate cancer so that other families
don't end up with a story that’s similar to ours," said Eric, pictured below with his children, Delaney and Jack.
This story is another poignant example of how your
participation makes a difference for thousands of people and holds special
significance for those at the event who have a close connection to someone who’s
been diagnosed with prostate cancer or someone who’s been lost to prostate
