Dear Friends and Supporters of Us TOO,
I'm pleased to share the latest edition of the HotSheet—the July 2013 edition.
As you may recall, I mentioned last month that right after we completed the June HotSheet we discovered that the FDA had approved Bayer’s Alpharain or radium 223, now called Xofigo (Ze-fee-go). In this July issue we have a cover story for you which gives additional information to what we placed on the Us TOO website.
We also placed the article on the AUA PSA Guidelines in the HotSheet again so we could have Dr. Chodak’s response on this issue. We, at Us TOO, and many of the other prostate cancer organizations recognize the confusion that exists out there on early detection and PSA and want to make sure we are responsive and informative. We have also placed an advocacy story from Kevin at Zero with a suggestion on action you can take on the US Preventive Services Task Force’s PSA recommendations such as taking good care of yourself as well as speaking up in your community and sharing your concerns with your elected officials.
In terms of concerns, we are hearing growing numbers of stories on the action being taken by the American Cancer Society (ACS) to withdraw support for community Man to Man prostate cancer support groups. This was a topic of heated discussion by our supporters, our staff, Us TOO volunteers and by our Board members alike. Please be aware that we, at Us TOO, stand ready to help and please let us know if we can be of assistance to any prostate cancer support groups which are being impacted by the ACS decision.
I want to thank those of you who recognized Father’s Day by making a gift to Us TOO or by visiting the My Prostate Cancer Roadmap’s Show Your Stripes for Prostate Cancer Awareness, each donation or pledge means a great deal to us and helps keep Us TOO in the fight against this disease. In that vein, I also want to encourage you to help Us TOO by getting involved in the 2013 Birdies for Charity event. You can win prizes and benefit Us TOO at the same time. Please visit the site at www.birdiesforcharity.com and make a pledge for US TOO (number 1391) before July 12th. These efforts really help us stay active and alive!
As we look ahead, Prostate cancer Awareness Month seems a good distance away, but plans are moving forward for key events. Please be aware that the registration is now open for the 2013 SEA Blue Walk & Run in Chicago’s Lincoln Park on September 15th. Rick Lyke’s Pints for Prostates has issued a $10,000 matching gift to the Us TOO Team Boardwalkers again this year. Visit the event website and enter the special code EARLYBIRD to receive a $10 discount through July 4th.
I am also pleased to share that the 2013 Prostate Cancer Conference which is produced by PCRI is also open for registration. It will be held in Los Angeles at the Marriott Airport Hotel on September 6th-8th this year. Us TOO is proud to support this conference and we will be seeking Us TOO volunteer support group leaders to hold sessions again during the conference this year.
I hope you enjoy the HotSheet and I appreciate all you are doing out there to move our cause forward.
