I am very pleased we are sending along the August HotSheet which means we are nearing the end of July already. I hope you all enjoyed the July 4th Independence Day holiday festivities in your communities and you are rested and ready because a lot will happen in the prostate cancer world over the next few weeks and months.
As you recall last month I mentioned that new legislation calling for further transparency of the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) was presented in Congress and you will notice a cover story and comment by Dr. Chodak appears in this edition of the HotSheet. There is also an interesting article on the speculations that oncologists are having to the implementation of the Affordable Care Act following the Supreme Court ruling and the Congressional failure to overturn it. We continue to monitor the Congressional activities to fund the Department of Defense Prostate Cancer Research Program and in July we saw that the House approved the DOD budget with no amendments of the research funding. Today I learned that the Senate will begin marking up Defense appropriations next week.
I would also like to mention that the last several issues of the HotSheet have included a short ad notifying you all that Us TOO leadership is seeking new volunteers for the Board of Directors. In recent meetings our Board Membership committee has identified 1) the need for geographic and cultural diversity and 2) some key skills the board is currently lacking. Some of the profiles of people we are seeking include those with a financial background, a marketing background, a private sector business background or an attorney with tax exempt organization experience. Please contact me if you have such a profile or know of someone who has. Strong and active governance and leadership of Us TOO is essential for a vital organization as you know and members of the Board can only serve for a limited time period.
Finally, as I have also mentioned for the last several months, it is not too early to plan your September “Prostate Cancer Awareness Month” activities. Please get involved in this year’s event and/or join us for the 8th Annual SEA Blue Walk/Run event set for Sunday September 16th. Information on participating is available at seablueprostatewalk.org.
Us TOO is making an increased effort this year in Chicago to highlight prostate cancer awareness and look soon for the announcement of a major, new awareness event on Saturday September 22nd. More news to follow in the days and weeks ahead so keep watching!
If you can travel, I also strongly encourage you to join me and attend Zero’s 2012 Summit on September 11th -13th. There are only a few slots open as I understand, so act soon by going to their registration site and/or consider attending the 2012 Prostate Cancer Conference planned for LA on September 7-9. Information can be found on the PCRI website at www.prostate-cancer.org.
