Dear Us TOO Supporter
I am very pleased to send along the July HotSheet. It is now officially Summer of course, and I was pleased to see the attention prostate cancer awareness received during Father’s Day and with the Men’s Health Awareness activities I saw in June. I truly appreciate those of you who donated to Us TOO to honor, or to remember your father, and those who were actively conducting and attending events in June to show your support and action.
I was able to be in Tacoma, Washington and in Seattle attending meetings and events with dedicated volunteers and activists. It was inspiring to see the turnout at the Seattle Pints for Prostates event and to witness the planning for July and August. Thank you to all those leaders and activists; you are role models and are leading by example!
Last month as you may recall Us TOO and the Prostate Cancer Roundtable issued a joint press release on the USPSTF final report. Yesterday we issued another supporting the move by Representatives Marsha Blackman and John Barrow who have chosen to introduce legislation calling for increased transparency in the USPSTF. It can be found on the Roundtable website. We plan to keep you posted as this legislation moves forward and triggers debate and discussion.
I would also like to point out that we saw a press release from the American Urological Association (AUA) describing a resolution passed by the American Medical Association (AMA) in June expressing concern about the recent USPSTF recommendations and “…encourage the USPSTF to implement procedures that allow for meaningful input on recommendation development from specialists and stakeholders in the topic area under study.”
Let me also give one final push for the Annual Birdies for Charity fundraising event sponsored by John Deere. As I mentioned through participation in this event, donation dollars can support Us TOO. You can get involved by going to the website at www.birdiesforcharity.com and the deadline for submission is July 13th.
Finally, as I mentioned last month, it is not too early to plan your September “Prostate Cancer Awareness Month” activities. I want to thank Dr. Mark Moyad for attending and making inspirational and hopeful comments during the Game Works SEA Blue Walk & Run kick-off event also held in June. Please get involved in this year’s event and/or join us for the 8th Annual SEA Blue Walk/Run event set for Sunday September 16th. Information on participating is available at seablueprostatewalk.org.
I also strongly encourage you to join me and attend Zero’s 2012 Summit on September 11-13. Use the Us TOO code 'ustoo2012' for a 30%. Also consider attending the 2012 Prostate Cancer Conference planned for LA on September 7th-9th.
